4506-C Tax Transcripts FAQs: Everything You Need to Know

What is the IRS Form 4506-C?

Form 4506-C is an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) document that is used to retrieve past tax returns, W-2, and 1099 transcripts that are on file with the IRS. The document gives permission for a third party to retrieve the tax payer’s data. The taxpayer must sign and date the 4506-C.

What is a “veri-tax”?

A “veri-tax” is an IRS Tax Transcript and is the finished result of an executed IRS Form 4506-C.

How long does it take to receive transcripts?

Completed transcripts usually are received in 1 – 2 business days and some are completed on the same business day.

How is Veri-tax able to complete 4506-C Requests so fast?

Veri-tax is an authorized bulk vendor of the IRS, processing thousands of 4506-C requests weekly through the IRS system of data processing centers. Veri-tax was the first vendor to deliver “veri-taxes” from the IRS electronically in 1999. Veri-tax is the leader in high volume IRS Form 4506-C Processing.

Can I go directly through the IRS to receive the transcripts?

Yes, but it can take anywhere between 6 to 60 days to receive the data from the IRS. Veri-tax will deliver the transcripts electronically. Moreover, Veri-tax offers customer service and order accountability that the IRS frequently lacks in processing Form 4506-C requests.

What are the different types of “veri-taxes” that can be requested via the 4506-C?

With the IRS Form 4506-C you can order 1040 (personal), 1120, 1065 (business), W-2, and 1099 transcripts. For less common transcript types, please email [email protected] for further assistance.

What is the difference between the IRS Form 4506, the IRS Form 4506-T, and IRS Form 4506-C?

The IRS Form 4506 is used to retrieve photo copies of the tax returns that were filed by the taxpayer. 4506 can take the IRS up to 60 days to complete. The IRS Form 4506-T is used to request tax transcripts directly from the IRS.  The IRS Form 4506-C is used to obtain IRS Tax through Veri-Tax (a “veri-tax”). Veri-tax specializes in 4506-C processing and does not offer 4506 or 4506-T services.

What is the difference between a “Copy of the IRS Tax Return” and an “IRS Tax Transcript” (a “veri-tax”)?

An IRS Tax TRANSCRIPT (“veri-tax”) is a line per line breakdown of the full tax return or data filed by the taxpayer or employer (W-2 & 1099). The photocopy of the return is a copy of the return filed. Tax Transcripts are obtained much more quickly than copies of tax returns. The photocopy is obtained by using the 4506 (not the 4506-C) and takes around 60 days for the IRS to process. Veri-tax does not process the IRS 4506, instead specializing in fast processing of 4506-C.

How long is the signature date on the 4506-C good for?

IRS Form 4506-C must be signed and dated by the taxpayer. The date is good for 120 days. This rule is strictly enforced by Veri-tax and the IRS. Any 4506-C that appears to have an altered signature or data will be rejected by Veri-tax and/or the IRS.
